"In office" vs. "in the office" vs. "at the office" en anglès

Després de publicar el meu article sobre l'ús de in/at school, un dels meus lectors em va preguntar sobre la diferència entre «in office» i «at office».

Normalment diríem o bé in the office o at the office (fixeu-vos en l'article determinat). La preposició «in» en la frase «I am in the office» indica que l'oficina és una habitació i que esteu dins d'aquesta habitació. La paraula «at», en canvi, expressa una idea general de localització i sovint és intercanviable amb «at work». Per resumir:

I am in my/the office. = My office is a room and I am in that room.

I am at my/the office. = I am somewhere near my office or in it; I am at work.

In office (sense article) significa una cosa força diferent. Diem que algú està «in office» quan treballa en una posició oficial, normalment per a l'estat. Per exemple, podríem dir:

Bill Clinton was in office from 1993 to 2001.

quan ens referim al seu mandat presidencial.

La variant at office (sense article) no s'utilitza habitualment. Si teniu la temptació de dir «at office», és millor dir «at the office»:

I am not at the office right now.

I am not at office right now.
