“in office” vs. “in the office” vs. “at the office” 的区别解析

在我发表了关于in/at school的文章后,一位读者问我“in office”和“at office”之间的区别。

通常我们会说in the officeat the office(注意定冠词)。在句子“I am in the office”中,介词“in”表示办公室是一个房间,而你在这个房间里面。另一方面,词语“at”表达了一种关于位置的笼统概念,常常可以与“at work”互换。总结如下:

I am in my/the office. = My office is a room and I am in that room.
I am at my/the office. = I am somewhere near my office or in it; I am at work.

In office(无冠词)意味着完全不同的事情。我们说某人“in office”时,指的是他在一个官方职位上工作,通常是为国家服务。例如,我们可以说:

Bill Clinton was in office from 1993 to 2001.

当我们提到他的总统任期时。

变体at office(无冠词)通常不使用。如果你有说“at office”的冲动,最好说“at the office”:

I am not at the office right now.
I am not at office right now.

这里有一些其他的例子,涵盖所有可能的组合:

I was in the office when you called.
She is not at the office today.
He has been in office for over ten years.
They will be at the office tomorrow morning.
