"In office" vs. "in the office" vs. "at the office" på engelska

Efter att jag publicerade min artikel om användningen av in/at school, frågade en av mina läsare mig om skillnaden mellan ”in office” och ”at office”.

Normalt skulle vi säga antingen in the office eller at the office (notera den bestämda artikeln). Prepositionen ”in” i meningen ”I am in the office” antyder att kontoret är ett rum och att du är inne i det rummet. Ordet ”at” å andra sidan uttrycker en allmän uppfattning om plats och är ofta utbytbart med ”at work”. För att sammanfatta:

I am in my/the office. = My office is a room and I am in that room.

I am at my/the office. = I am somewhere near my office or in it; I am at work.

In office (utan artikel) betyder något helt annat. Vi säger att någon är ”in office” när de arbetar i en officiell position, vanligtvis för staten. Till exempel skulle vi kunna säga:

Bill Clinton was in office from 1993 to 2001.

när vi hänvisar till hans presidentperiod.

Varianten at office (utan artikel) används inte vanligtvis. Om du känner ett behov av att säga ”at office”, säg hellre ”at the office”:

I am not at the office right now.

I am not at office right now.
