ในภาพ หรือ บนภาพ ในภาษาอังกฤษ

ในหลายภาษา เรามักใช้คำบุพบทที่แปลว่า "on" เมื่อพูดถึงภาพ ในภาษาอังกฤษ คำบุพบทที่ถูกต้องคือ "in":

The boy in the photo looks sad.

The boy on the photo looks sad.

หลักการนี้ใช้ได้ไม่ว่าจะใช้คำว่าอะไรสำหรับสื่อภาพ (เช่น "image", "photo", "picture", "drawing"):

There are no trees in the picture.

There are no trees on the picture.

คำบุพบท "on" ใช้เมื่อเราต้องการบอกว่าสิ่งใดอยู่บนพื้นผิวของวัตถุทางกายภาพ เช่น "there's a cup on a photo" หมายถึงว่ามีถ้วย วางอยู่ บนภาพถ่ายนั้น เช่นเดียวกัน เราใช้ "on" เมื่อสิ่งหนึ่งเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของชั้นบนสุดของอีกสิ่งหนึ่ง ซึ่งอาจทำให้สับสนเล็กน้อยกับคำว่า "postcard" เราจะพูดว่า:

There's a house on the postcard.

There’s a house in the postcard.

เหตุผลคือ "postcard" เป็นชิ้นกระดาษเอง ไม่ใช่สิ่งที่พิมพ์อยู่บนนั้น (ต่างจากคำว่า "picture" ที่หมายถึงเนื้อหาภาพจริง) สิ่งที่คุณหมายถึงจริง ๆ คือ: "There's a house (in the picture that is) on the postcard."

ในทำนองเดียวกัน หากคุณเห็นภาพของผู้ชายวาดอยู่บนซองจดหมาย (envelope) คุณจะไม่พูดว่าผู้ชายอยู่ "in an envelope" ใช่ไหม? ผู้ชาย (คือภาพของเขา) อยู่ on an envelope.
