英語で「in a picture」と「on a picture」の使い分け

多くの言語では、画像に関連して「on」と訳される前置詞を使用します。しかし、英語では正しい前置詞は「in」です：
The boy in the photo looks sad.
The boy on the photo looks sad.
この原則は、視覚メディアの単語（例えば、「image」、「photo」、「picture」、「drawing」）に関係なく適用されます：
There are no trees in the picture.
There are no trees on the picture.
前置詞「on」は、何かが物理的なオブジェクトの表面にあることを表現したいときにのみ使用します。例えば、「there's a cup on a photo」は、カップが写真の上に置かれていることを意味します。同様に、「on」は、一つのものが別のものの上層の一部であるときに使用します。これは「postcard」のような言葉では少し混乱するかもしれません。次のように言います：
There's a house on the postcard .
There’s a house in the postcard.
理由は、「postcard」は紙そのものであり、そこに印刷されているものではないからです（「picture」という言葉とは対照的に、実際の視覚的内容を指します）。実際に言いたいのは、「There's a house (in the picture that is) on the postcard.」です。
同様に、封筒（envelope）に描かれた男性の絵を見た場合、男性が「in an envelope」にいるとは言わないでしょう？男性（つまり彼の絵）はon an envelopeです。
正しい使用例をいくつか示します：
The cat in the drawing is very realistic.
The cat on the drawing is very realistic.
She found a mistake in the image.
She found a mistake on the image.
The details in the painting are exquisite.
The details on the painting are exquisite
逆に、前置詞「on」が適切な単語の例をいくつか示します：
