同じ論理は前置詞「in」の後にも当てはまりますが、時には混乱を招くことがあります:

「future」が名詞として使われる場合、状況は少し複雑です。「将来のこと」を一般的に指す場合、通常は定冠詞と共に使われます:
No one knows the future.
No one knows future.
You should start thinking about the future.
You should start thinking about future.
フレーズ「in the future」のアメリカ英語とイギリス英語での使い方
フレーズ「in the future」には2つの意味があります。「将来のある時点」を表す場合、定冠詞と共に使われます:
I would like to move to Spain in the future.
I would like to move to Spain in future.
しかし、「in the future」が「今から」を意味する場合、アメリカ英語とイギリス英語で違いがあります。アメリカ人は前述のように「in the future」を使いますが、イギリス人は「in future」（冠詞なし）を使うことが多いです。したがって、「今後はもっと注意してください」という文は次のように表現できます:
In future, please, be more careful. (British English)
In the future, please, be more careful. (American English)
アメリカ英語を話す場合、この違いを考える必要はありません。しかし、イギリス英語を話す場合、「in future」を「in the future」の代わりに使うと、文の意味が全く変わることがあります。比較してください:
Human beings will live on the Moon in the future.
(Human beings will live on the Moon at some point in the future.)
