英語の「In comparison to」と「in comparison with」の違い

「compare something to something」と「compare something with something」は同じ意味ではありません（違いについては私の前の記事で詳しく読むことができます）が、「in comparison to」と「in comparison with」のバリエーションは全く同じ意味を表します。例えば、次のように言うことができます:

In comparison to other candidates, she was very good.

と同様に

In comparison with other candidates, she was very good.

意味は「compared with」や「compared to」のフレーズと基本的に同じです。さらに例を挙げると:

France is relatively rich, in comparison to/with other European countries.
The American branch of the company makes very little profit, in comparison to/with their Asian division.

「in comparison with」は過去には「in comparison to」よりもはるかに一般的でしたが、現代の英文学では同じくらい頻繁に見られます。

正しい使用例をいくつか挙げます:
