9 Construction materials and methods vocabulary

This section discusses materials and methods commonly used in the construction of buildings.

brick – a building material made from clay and hardened by heat.

concrete – a building material made from cement, sand, gravel, and water.

timber – wood prepared for use in building and carpentry.

steel frame – a construction method using steel structural components.

drywall – a panel used to create interior walls and ceilings.

insulation – materials used to reduce heat transfer and increase energy efficiency.

foundation – the lowest load-bearing part of a building, typically below ground level.

framing – the construction of the structural framework of a building.

load-bearing wall – a wall that supports the weight above it.
