6 European architectural styles

In the one of the previous chapters, we discussed architectural styles that are common in Europe as well as the US. Here are additional styles that are common in Europe but not very common in the United States.

Romanesque – known for thick walls, round arches, sturdy pillars, and large towers, this style dominated Europe before the Gothic period.

Renaissance – a revival of classical Greek and Roman architecture, featuring symmetry, columns, and domes.

Baroque – ornate and dramatic, with intricate details, bold contrasts, and grand staircases.

Rococo – highly decorative and playful, with light colors, curved forms, and elaborate ornamentation.

Byzantine – defined by domes, mosaics, and a strong emphasis on interior decorative richness.

châteauesque – inspired by French châteaux, characterized by steeply pitched roofs, elaborate ornamentation, and conical towers.

Art Deco – a decorative style featuring geometric patterns and bold colors.
