Automotive industry essential vocabulary

Learn words and phrases that every non-native English speaker who works in car sales or manufacturing (or is a car enthusiast) should know. When you click on any word (if you are logged in), you can see its meaning and all other necessary information.

You can use keyboard shortcuts, if you have a keyboard connected. Arrow keys and h, j, k, l keys can be used to move around. The keys b, r, g, and s put a star on a particular meaning (blue), pronunciation (red), word form (green), or sentence respectively. You can also move between word forms in the widget using the i and o keys and open the dictionary popup using the u key.

This course consists of 19 thematic sections with short overviews of words like the following:

sedan – a passenger car in a three-box configuration with separate compartments for engine, passenger, and cargo.

hatchback – a car with a rear door that swings upward to provide access to a cargo area.

station wagon, also known as estate car in the UK – a car body style with a two-box design and a large cargo area shared with the passenger area.

When you come across a meaning that you find surprising or cannot remember well, use the blue star to save the word for later. You can review and download all your saved words in the Vocabulary section in the left menu.

Of course, feel free to use the other stars too, if you are unsure about the pronunciation or grammar. Reviewing the saved words with example sentences really helps.

After finishing this course, you will have learned over 300 words and phrases related to cars. If you master them all with the help of the Vocabulary section, good job! Your knowledge of English automotive vocabulary will be better than that of almost all non-native speakers.
