1. to change the form or appearance of something

2. to undergo a change or become different
   As the seasons alter, the landscape transforms from green to a palette of autumn hues.
3. to adjust clothing so it fits better
   She took her dress to the tailor to have it altered before the wedding.
4. to influence someone's mind or mental state
   The high fever altered his state of mind, causing him to hallucinate.
