1 Banking industry essential vocabulary: Introduction

Learn words and phrases that every non-native English speaker who works in banking or finance (or who needs to communicate with banks) should know. When you click on any word (if you are logged in), you can see its meaning and all other necessary information.

You can use keyboard shortcuts, if you have a keyboard connected. Arrow keys and h, j, k, l keys can be used to move around. The keys b, r, g, and s put a star on a particular meaning (blue), pronunciation (red), word form (green), or sentence respectively. You can also move between word forms in the widget using the i and o keys and open the dictionary popup using the u key.

This course consists of 17 thematic sections with short overviews of words like the following:

bank – a financial institution licensed to receive deposits and make loans.

deposit – money placed into a banking account.

withdrawal – the act of taking money out of a banking account.

When you come across a meaning that you find surprising or cannot remember well, use the blue star to save the word for later. You can review and download all your saved words in the Vocabulary section in the left menu.

Of course, feel free to use the other stars too, if you are unsure about the pronunciation or grammar. Reviewing the saved words with example sentences really helps.

After finishing this course, you will have learned over 300 words and phrases related to banking. If you master them all with the help of the Vocabulary section, good job! Your knowledge of English banking vocabulary will be better than that of almost all non-native speakers.
