2024 Olympic Gold Medals in Europe by Country

The 2024 Summer Olympic games in Paris are over, and we can finally count who's bringing home the highest weight in gold. The following map shows the total number of gold medals won by athletes representing each country (countries with zero gold medals are not labelled).

For comparison, the other top countries managed to secure the following gold medal counts:

  • United States: 40
  • China: 40
  • Japan: 20
  • Australia: 18
(all mentioned so far are ahead of the top European contender, which is France with 16 golds)
  • Korea: 13
  • New Zealand: 10
  • Canada: 9
  • Uzbekistan: 8.

Notably absent from the gold medal count is Russia, which, based on past performances, would have been expected to rank among the top in Europe. However, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) barred athletes representing Russia from participating in the 2024 Games due to previous doping scandals and international law violations by Russian officials.

However, the total count is not necessarily an indicator of a country's success rate. To get a better idea of how well the countries perform relative to their size, take a look at the following map showing the number of golds per 10 million inhabitants:
