Notably absent from the gold medal count is Russia, which, based on past performances, would have been expected to rank among the top in Europe. However, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) barred athletes representing Russia from participating in the 2024 Games due to previous doping scandals and international law violations by Russian officials.
However, the total count is not necessarily an indicator of a country's success rate. To get a better idea of how well the countries perform relative to their size, take a look at the following map showing the number of golds per 10 million inhabitants:
